Dispersion-engineered silicon nitride waveguides for mid-infrared supercontinuum generation covering the wavelength range 0.8-6.5 mu m
We numerically demonstrate the generation of a mid-infrared supercontinuum (SC) through the design of an on-chip complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatible 10-mm-long air-clad rectangular waveguide made using stoichiometric silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) as the core and MgF 2 glass as its lower cladding. The proposed waveguide is optimized for pumping in both the anomalous and all-normal dispersion regimes. A number of waveguide geometries are optimized for pumping at 1.55 μ m with ultrashort pulses of 50-fs duration and a peak power of 5 kW. By initially keeping the thickness constant at 0.8 μ m, four different structures are engineered with varying widths between 3 μ m and 6 μ m. The largest SC spectral evolution covering a region of 0.8 μ m to beyond 6.5 μ m could be realized by a waveguide geometry with a width of 3 μ m. Numerical analysis shows that increasing width beyond 3 μ m by fixing thickness at 0.8 μ m results in a reduction of the SC extension in the long wavelength side. However, the SC spectrum can be enhanced beyond 6.5 μ m by increasing the waveguide thickness beyond 0.9 μ m with the same peak power and pump source. To the best of our knowledge, this is first time report of a broad SC spectral evolution through numerical demonstration in the mid-infrared region by the silicon nitride waveguide. In the case of all-normal dispersion pumping, a flatter SC spectra can be predicted with the same power and pump pulse but with a reduced bandwidth spanning 950–2100 nm
Deadline-Aware Reservation-Based Scheduling
The ever-growing need to improve return-on-investment (ROI) for cluster infrastructure that processes data which is being continuously generated at a higher rate than ever before introduces new challenges for big-data processing frameworks. Highly complex mixed workload arriving at modern clusters along with a growing number of time-sensitive critical production jobs necessitates cluster management systems to evolve. Most big-data systems are not only required to guarantee that production jobs will complete before their deadline, but also minimize the latency for best-effort jobs to increase ROI.
This research presents DARSS, a deadline-aware reservation-based scheduling system. DARSS addresses the above-stated problem by using a reservation-based approach to scheduling that supports temporal requirements of production jobs while keeping the latency for best-effort jobs low. Fined-grained resource allocation enables DARSS to schedule more tasks than a coarser-grained approach would. Furthermore, DARSS schedules production jobs as close to their deadlines as possible. This scheduling policy allows the system to maximize the number of low-priority tasks that can be scheduled opportunistically. DARSS is a scalable system that can be integrated with YARN.
DARSS is evaluated on a simulated cluster of 300 nodes against a workload derived from Google Borg's trace. DARSS is compared with Microsoft's Rayon and YARN's built-in scheduler. DARSS achieves better production job acceptance rate than both YARN and Rayon. The experiments show that all of the production jobs accepted by DARSS complete before their deadlines. Furthermore, DARSS has a higher number of best-effort jobs serviced than Rayon. And finally, DARSS has lower latency for best-effort jobs than Rayon
Employability skills for hospitality students in Malaysia

The Introduction of Learning Organization in Selected Malaysian Organizations: A Comparative Case Study
Little concern has been given to discover the deeper meanings and intricacies of learning
organization, although this term has been widespread and has gained attention in a
number of Malaysian organizations. The main concern of this study was to generate
insight to the understanding of the perspectives of learning organization, its
implementations and challenges in selected Malaysian organizations. Specifically, the
objectives of the study were: (1) to gain insight and understanding of the concepts of
learning organization in selected organizations ; (2) to understand how the selected
organizations take steps to implement learning organization; and (3) to understand the
challenges faced by the selected organizations in the implementation of learning
organization.
Multiple qualitative case study approach was used to answer the research objectives.
Data were collected through interviews, observations and analysis of formal documents
from the selected organizations. The findings of this study were obtained from both within-case analysis and cross-case analysis. For within-case analysis, the description
of three organizations selected was described individually. Whereas, for the cross-case
analysis the description compared the findings from each of the three organizations
selected. Several methods were used to check the validity and reliability of this study.
Three methods : 'triangulation', 'member check' and 'peer examination technique' were
employed to check the internal validity. External validity was checked by using multisite
approach. To increase reliability, this study used the triangulation process,
graduate committee review and audit trail.
This study found that although the understanding and implementation of learning
organization was at the beginning stage in each of the organizations, the result showed
some evolving ideas occurred throughout the three organizations . All the three
organizations showed the understanding of the concepts of learning organization, its
implementation and challenges were based on their own identity. Organization A,
being a technical service and development organization, seemed to be more Western-oriented
approach. Organization B, which was involved in agriculture and food
research and development, was more concerned with experimental activities that related
to the Japanese approach. Organization C was a Malay-dominated organization
inculcated with Islamic values assimilated both Western and Japanese approaches into
the local approach, labeled as the Islamic approach.
As a conclusion, the study clarified the understanding of the concepts, its
implementation and challenges of learning organization in the selected organizations. The study also identified some guidelines for coping with challenges in implementing
learning organization within the three selected organizations. The study recommended
that the three organizations should continue their efforts in developing their
organizations towards becoming full-pledge learning organizations
